Prepare the Sauce
- In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. This allows the oil to warm up and enhances its flavor.
- Add the minced garlic to the pan and sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant, stirring frequently to prevent burning. This step releases the garlic's essential oils, giving the sauce a rich flavor.
- Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes and stir to combine with the garlic and oil. The tomatoes will form the base of your sauce.
- Add the sugar, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir well to incorporate all the ingredients.
- Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Allow it to cook uncovered for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. This simmering process thickens the sauce and melds the flavors together.
- Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning if necessary, adding more salt or herbs to suit your preference.
- If you prefer a smoother sauce, use a blender or immersion blender to puree the sauce to your desired consistency. Be careful with hot liquids!
- Once done, remove from heat and let it cool slightly before using it on your pizza or storing it in an airtight container.
