Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 cups canned crushed tomatoes Use high-quality San Marzano tomatoes for the best flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil Extra virgin olive oil is recommended for flavor.
  • 3 cloves garlic Minced or finely chopped.
  • 1 teaspoon sugar Helps to balance the acidity of the tomatoes.
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano For authentic Italian flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil Use fresh basil if available, about 1 tablespoon.
  • ½ teaspoon salt Adjust to taste.
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper Freshly ground for the best flavor.
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes Optional, for a spicy kick.

Method

Prepare the Sauce
  1. In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. This allows the oil to warm up and enhances its flavor.
  2. Add the minced garlic to the pan and sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant, stirring frequently to prevent burning. This step releases the garlic's essential oils, giving the sauce a rich flavor.
  3. Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes and stir to combine with the garlic and oil. The tomatoes will form the base of your sauce.
  4. Add the sugar, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir well to incorporate all the ingredients.
  5. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Allow it to cook uncovered for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. This simmering process thickens the sauce and melds the flavors together.
  6. Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning if necessary, adding more salt or herbs to suit your preference.
  7. If you prefer a smoother sauce, use a blender or immersion blender to puree the sauce to your desired consistency. Be careful with hot liquids!
  8. Once done, remove from heat and let it cool slightly before using it on your pizza or storing it in an airtight container.
