Method
Prepare the Apples
- Peel the apples using a peeler. This removes the skin, which can be tough and bitter.
- Core and chop the apples into small pieces (about 1-inch cubes). This helps them cook evenly and quickly.
Cook the Apples
- In a large pot, combine the chopped apples, water, sugar, and lemon juice. The water will create steam to help cook the apples.
- Cover the pot and cook over medium heat for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the apples to soften and break down.
- After 20 minutes, check the apples. If they are soft enough, proceed to the next step. If not, continue cooking for an additional 5-10 minutes.
Mash or Blend the Apples
- Once the apples are soft, remove the pot from heat. Use a wooden spoon to mash the apples directly in the pot for a chunky texture.
- For a smoother applesauce, transfer the mixture to a food processor and blend until desired consistency is reached.
Add Flavor
- Stir in the cinnamon if using, and adjust the sweetness by adding more sugar if desired. Taste the applesauce and adjust flavors as necessary.
Cool and Serve
- Let the applesauce cool to room temperature before serving. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.
- Serve chilled or at room temperature, as a side dish or snack.
