Ingredients

For the Casserole
  • 1 lb ground beef Use lean ground beef for less grease.
  • 1 cup onion Finely chopped.
  • 2 cloves garlic Minced.
  • 1 cup pickles Chopped, dill or sweet based on preference.
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese Shredded.
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese Shredded.
  • 1 can diced tomatoes 14.5 oz, drained.
  • 1 cup ketchup For added flavor.
  • 1 cup mustard Yellow or Dijon based on preference.
  • 1 teaspoon salt To taste.
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper Freshly ground.
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce For depth of flavor.
For the Topping
  • 2 cups tater tots Frozen, for convenience.
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese Shredded, for topping.

Method

Prepare the Meat Mixture
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures that your casserole cooks evenly and thoroughly.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for an additional 3-4 minutes until the onion is translucent and fragrant.
  4. Stir in the chopped pickles, diced tomatoes, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix well and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes to combine the flavors.
Assemble the Casserole
  1. Transfer the meat mixture into a 9x13 inch baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  2. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheese evenly over the meat mixture.
  3. Top the cheese layer with the frozen tater tots, arranging them in a single layer for even cooking.
Bake the Casserole
  1. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the tater tots are golden brown and crispy.
  2. Remove from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes before serving. This helps the casserole set a bit, making it easier to serve.
